Writing...
When authors write it is to entertain or educate. Writing to entertain is a talent and a craft. Everyone can write but a truly talented writer can create an entire world in the reader's mind and make them apart of it. This is not something which can be taught.
The rules we learn in school to write are a base and generally geared for technical writing which does not engage the imagination. Those who do technical writing are sticklers for the rules because it is what they have to do to stay within the structure of technical writing. Technical writing can be taught, it is a process and processes can be taught.
However, storytelling is different than technical writing, it does still have basic rules, spelling, grammar, sentence structure and flow, but with storytelling, the goal is to engage the reader, make them feel, and see what you, as the author, want them to see and feel. An author always has to show, not tell when it comes right down to it.
In order for writing to be good, it has to have the passion behind it. The passion in what is being written. If the author does not feel anything about what they are writing, then the reader will not feel anything when they read it, hence leaving the writing as nothing more than words not a story.
Creativity and passion are the lifelines to storytelling, you have to have both when you are writing to engage readers.
Be passionate about your writing, feel what you are writing and the reader will too.
